Many people mistakenly believe that anyone wielding an acoustic guitar is a folk musician. It doesn’t really work like that; genres aren’t instruments, and vice versa. Okay, “Good Enough (Still I Try) (Acoustic)” has some folky vibes, but for me, this is acoustic pop at its finest.
Listen to it, it is a song of easy grooves, of soaring soulfulness, an infectiousness, extraordinary use of the dynamic rise and fall, and when it has its foot on the gas, it runs on the kind of island-vibe soaked beat, that sassy rhythm which you find yourself shuffling along, swaying, stepping around, and finally strutting your stuff to. Tell me that isn’t pop music?
But more than just those pop moves, it features some amazingly dexterous guitar playing, the sort of music that evokes the sun’s sparkle on the azure waters of Iberian shores, deft blends of classical and Spanish guitar that are every bit as emotive as the vocals.
The icing on the cake is the humbling nature of the lyrics, the sound of a man who knows that we are all fallible, that none of us is perfect, and rather than submit to such voices of doubt that seem to reside within, he expresses through song the desire to work to become a better version of himself.
What a great song. What a fantastic understanding of the human condition. What a a cool mission statement. And what an inspiring sentiment.
