“Insta Queen” sums up everything that is wrong with the world, in my opinion. A story about a young online influencer and her fixated follower, and the one thing they have in common is that they are both obsessed with her image! And whilst the tale told here is innocent enough, this is, as a quick scan of the news headlines on any given day will remind us, how it all begins, a gateway into a darker world. But that’s a different story for another time. Not that I’m pointing a finger at the band, they are just writing songs that reflect the world around us, which is all artists have ever done.
What I love most about Lemon is that they might come from 21st-century Amsterdam, but they sound like late-eighties Manchester, that baggy blend of dance and rock, 60s shimmer, and 80s alternative cool. If I told you that this song first appeared on a split 7” single with an early Inspiral Carpets track on the other side, I’m sure few would argue. It’s the sound of *Madsterdam,” the birth of “Netherpop.”
While it is easy for journalists like me to attribute tags and labels, the fact that this band already has five albums under its belt and has opened for the likes of Primal Scream, The Charlatans, and Stereo MCs tells you everything you need to know regarding their authenticity.
Right, does anyone know how to say “Mad fer it,” in Dutch?
