Lovesick Saints - Dia De Los Muertos (Self-Released)

16 May 2014

Lovesick Saints are a punk band from Scottsdale, Arizona. On their most recent EP, Dia De Los Muertos they continue and progress their unique brand of punk—think of it as a cross between the Ramones and Social Distortion, the band obviously showing a deep love for both. Featuring politically-and-socially-heavy lyrics, there’s enough feedback and distortion to please just about every kind of punk.

The lead single, “War Story” is described as “a heart-felt punk rock tribute to all those who fought and sacrificed their lives for our freedom”. It’s pretty heavy handed stuff, reminiscent of the leap Neil Young took on his Living With War album, and some might find it, like that album, a little too heavy handed. It’s an almost impossible genre to pull off—*The Jam’s Paul Weller* being one of the exceptions—and while the lyrics don’t entirely succeed here, the guitar lines and vocal hooks are enough to capture and retain interest throughout.

They have a lot more success on the opening track “One Foot in the Grave”, and the title track is a killer instrumental featuring extremely strong solos for a punk band. The band incorporate acoustic guitars effectively on “Empty”, and “This Ain’t It” is one of the best songs here, almost verging on grunge. For any fan of classic punk, Dia De Los Muertos is a thoroughly enjoyable EP and sure to please even the most crusty punk around.
