Although perhaps best known as the guitarist with My Dear Addiction, “No Angel is Watching” is the sound of Ludwig Jonsson stepping out along a solo path, and doing so in every sense of the meaning, as here we find him not only covering all recording and production duties but also playing every instrument himself.
The result is a tremendous sonic slice, one that sits at the point where modern alt-rock leans slightly into melodic metal, where muscle and melody seem to be balanced in perfect harmony. The song has plenty of hooks and riffs to groove and grind along, but these are balanced by more symphonic interludes, adding a sense of graceful anthemics to the proceedings.
This is rock music for the modern age—rock music that hasn’t forgotten that it has a past but which takes all the things that made the genre great in the first place and just slightly reworks that sound for a contemporary audience. It sits somewhere between the abrasive, dirty sound of garage rock and the technicality of nu-metal, between the groove of classic rock and the outsiderness of the alternative sound.
