Blending dream pop sonics into folktronic rhythms, Mahta’s latest single is a serene and seductive slice of music. But just like “I Don’t Mind,” my first encounter with this Toronto-based artist, even that tagline is too confining. Best not to think too hard about it, just let the music work its magic.
And magic is the right word, for this is a song that seems to glide towards the listener rather than arrive by the usual mechanisms, an ethereal experience, otherworldly and sparkling with wonder, atmosphere as much as art, something to be experienced as much as heard. And given the busy beats that build in the sonic undertow, Mahta’s voice keeps the song in a constant state of grace.
Even as it builds towards a more ornate and intricate final act, it is poise rather than pace, drift instead of drive that are the defining factors here, a song able to gather all manner of atmospheres and anticipations, gossamer sonics and dreamscape sounds, and do so in enough quantities to find and form an unexpected weight. Layers of near-nothingness through which the light shines and the creative colours mix, and the result is both kaleidoscopic and infectious.
Less music, more of an emotional experience.
