Taken from the embarrassment of sonic riches that is the Dear Infrastructure album, “Here in Your Backyard” continues the Marble Raft’s scintillating journey through dream pop, ambient, and understated indie realms. The album follows the journey of two teenagers wandering through an abandoned and overgrown city. Given that this is found as track two, and given the title, this seems to be the soundtrack to a social gathering at the start of their journey through that silent cityscape.
But it is a perfect indication of what is to come, a blend of chiming indie and escapist, modern fairy-tale vibes, shimmering soundscapes, and ethereal vibes all wrapped up together into a sonic passage that sounds both textured, layered, and ornate yet spacious and full of light. I’m not sure how they do it, but they do, and they do so brilliantly.
Twelve-string guitars resonate, autoharps ring out, and synthesizers sweep and swoon, building the perfect backdrop to the young adventurers’ explorations into the urban unknown, and in this case seemingly finding themselves at a chaotic party of wild and wonderful, strange and stupendous people in a backyard somewhere in that strange inner city setting.
If this is your first taste of Marble Raft, then you have chosen a brilliant place to join the story. If you are familiar with their work, you will understand how this song fits together into their alternative world-building music. Either way, “Here in Your Backyard” is a gorgeous and graceful piece of music, and, like all good singles, it implores you to step into that world and experience more.
