Martin Kuiper - Time (self-released)

19 January 2026

In the sixties, popular myth tells us that you were either a fan of The Beatles or The Stones, one tribe or the other, the choice was intricately forged pop or blistering, bluesy R&B. Well, I feel that if “Time” was released in, say, 1967, it would have been claimed by both sides.

This second single, released ahead of his latest album, Prison Of Modesty, which will be along in the summer, seems to incorporate what was great about both sounds, blending intense, low-slung guitar salvos with deft pop harmonies, the edge and energy of rock and roll with the infectiousness and awareness of the formative pop sound.

That is not to say that it is a song stuck in the past, there are plenty of other vibes at work – a slight 90’s Brit-pop groove, some early naughties guitar-revival pop-rock and a full-band, singer-songwriter vibe of the here-and-now. But it certainly tips its hat to a few past glories from the golden age.

Such astute merging of sounds could only come from an older, wiser head, someone unconcerned with modern fad and fashion, and that is indeed what sits on Martin Kuiper’s shoulders, after all, here is a man who didn’t start releasing music until a few years ago at the age of 49.

Then again, as they say, there is no Time like the present. (See what I did there?)
