Mary Stand - Least Of All Her (Hygh Tension Records)

9 September 2025

We have heard the song before, released earlier in the year as part of the I Don’t Need Your Permission album’s bid for world domination, or failing that, at least decent sales. But videos are often be the icing on the cake of even the best songs, a way of using visuals to draw even more meaning, provoke more thought, and make it crystal clear what the song is about, and so here it is again with an added dimension.

For although the music itself sees Mary Strand doing what she does so well – musically-scuzzed up yet totally accessible indie married up with infectious alt-pop vibes and punky sonic attitudes – there is as much going on in the lyrics, more really, that demands your attention.

“Least of All Her” is a stand against domestic violence, a counter to this “boys will be boys” attitude that often sees young men get away with murder, sometimes quite literally, a reminder that whilst everyone argues and debates the level of justice metered out on the perpertrator, there is a broken person at the heart of the story who all too often gets ignored.

So no more defenses based on “he’s got a great career ahead of him,” no more, “he was too young, too drunk, too provoked,” and no more use of privilege and backhanders to grease the wheels of justice, no more mitigating circumstances or crimes of passion; these people should end up where they deserve to be. It doesn’t heal the damage they have done to anyone, least of all her, the victim, but hopefully it makes society a slightly safer place.
