MatAre - Under a Stone (Matt Rousseau)

14 January 2025

If songs such as “Perfect Constant” and “Forever Light” always made me think of some of the great bands that colored my formative musical learning curve, such as House of Love and Echo and the Bunnymen, the new one, “Under A Stone” initially puts me in mind of Cocteau Twins. Just briefly, but every time that main riff becomes the focal point, I get the urge to play Heaven or Las Vegas and dream of a 1990 reverie.

But this is not a nostalgic look to the past, nor should it be, and as soon as the beat lifts and the vocals speak in a more easily recognizable language, you realize that MatAre is his own man.

Yet, there is something in that blend of forward-thinking indie modernity and more dream-pop memories that makes “Under A Stone” such a great experience. It has a groove and energy yet is cocooned in the aforementioned sound and scene’s drifting haze and sublime atmospherics.

And those floating sounds and chiming motifs, shimmering sonics, and delicate guitar lines neatly capture the ideas of solitude and accepting a solo life that he is reflecting on with this song. But the beat and drive are the mechanisms that stops the whole thing from becoming too melancholic or too pathos-filled.

Opposites attract, they say, and musically, that is what is happening here, making it a wonderfully addictive song because of this gentle collision and coming together of sonic worlds.
