Michael Beck - Free Yourself (Nixi Music)

15 November 2024

As I have mentioned before, Michael Beck’s music goes beyond just being a listening experience. Of course, it is music to be heard and enjoyed, just as any song is, but hearing is just one of the senses it engages with, and Michael makes music designed to go beyond such mundane connections.

As “Free Yourself” shows us, something familiar to all of the songs found on his album to come, Surrender; this song is also designed to stimulate contemplation, gives you food for thought, and deep thought at that; it is truly music with a message. Here, that message is that it is okay to put down any thoughts of guilt and blame that you may carry with you, and only when you find it in yourself to do so will you be able to embrace who you really are.

Some music makes you feel something; some makes you think. “Free Yourself” is music that not only does both but also taps into the deepest levels of human potential.

To carry this message out into the world, he has once again gathered around him a familiar group of great musicians, and it is through their talent and musical deftness that the perfect music is woven. With producer Txai Fernando blending chiming, understated piano, and additional yet spacious guitars to form a core, there is plenty of space left for Chandra Lacombe’s exotic Kalimba sounds and Elena Rodevic’s wandering violin to breeze through. All of this is underpinned masterfully by Diego Francisco’s bass, which seems to tie everything together and do so with such finesse that it seems almost an invisible sonic glue.

Music can be many things and can explore many ideas and outcomes. But few can turn their music into something genuinely philosophical, guiding, teaching, contemplative, and revelatory in the way that Michael does and does so via such tender and understated sonics.
