Digging down into what makes Moon Construction Kit’s latest single, “Chemicals,” so intriguing is like peeling the layers of an onion. (Without the tears, obviously.) But that is the fun thing about getting to review good music, the reverse engineering, it appeals to the musical nerd in us scribblers. And this is excellent music to explore, unpick, and excavate.
There is a pop-aware accessibility going on here, but it is used to deliver big, brooding slabs of electro-enhanced rock. It also sits somewhere between the shadow-sheen of darkwave and those more pioneering post-punk synth-ers. And then there is a slight psychedelic quality to it, all of which makes for a perfect blend of deftness and dynamics, poise and power.
It’s a layered and smart piece of music, and that goes for the lyrics too. It is a reminder that sometimes, when life gets too much, the only response is to switch off, give yourself time to rejuvenate and reenergize before coming back to the world renewed.
And that balance of chaos and a search for a quiet place is reflected in the music that carries this vital message; a track that is often squalling and complex, a wave of energy and euphoria that walks a fine line between the harmonious and the chaotic.
“Chemicals” is a beautifully ornate track that balances old-school analog with digital deftness and effortless groove with thoughtful messaging. If only all music were this astute.
