Mother Coyote - The Tower (self-released)

12 February 2025

It can’t be a coincidence that as the world becomes a darker and less enlightened place, as brooding clouds seem to be gathering on every horizon, more and more artists are compelled to write songs about healing and empathy. And whilst Mother Coyote’s new single, “The Tower,” doesn’t explicitly tackle the political and social subjects behind this dimming of the light head on, it does offer us solace, although more in a spiritual form.

Taken from her new EP, When The War Comes, which has a quite a telling title in itself, “The Tower” speaks of those balancing forces found along life’s journey, opposites such as life and death, the individual and the collective, and the light in the dark that is healing and understanding.

As the song grows from almost classical tones, delicate blends of voice, piano, and strings, as it transitions through a majestic, esoteric, and ornate alt-pop sound and finally matures into anthemic grandeur; the video follows suit, moving from cool images of emptiness and isolation through shamanic fire rituals, cleansing flames, and other objects, and esoteria.

Gorgeous is such an overused word, especially when describing music, but how can you opt for any other epithet when faced with music of this caliber?
