If you remember the story of Chicken Little, you will recall that he was afraid that the sky would fall on his head (a paranoia shared by Chief Vitalstatistix in the Asterix graphic novels). But more than just a story, it is an excellent metaphor for modern times, when it feels as if all manner of unexpected and unwarranted ills are raining down on us.
That is the sentiment at work in this latest single from mozworth, incidentally their first release since the solo project evolved into a full-fledged band. And if it is a sense of chaos, that out-of-control, free-fall feeling that the band is trying to capture, then they have done it perfectly.
Their blend of raw rock riffs and indie deftness, that on/off dynamic of punked-up power and more melodic considerations, that ebb and flow between sonic peaks and latent lulls, perfectly expresses that feeling that we are all just bracing for impact, that the repercussions of sweeping political and social changes being enacted, not just in their home country but around the world, are about to come home to roost (to keep the poultry metaphor going.)
As a calling card for the next chapter of the band, it is excellent; as a piece of social commentary, it is pertinent, poignant, and an absolutely essential document of our times.
