There’s music that nods to the past. There are wonderfully nostalgic songs. And then there is Myles From Home. As the new single “Van Trippin’” demonstrates, they take some cool flavors garnered from music’s rich tapestry to create a sort of funky, hippie energy; they then proceed to blend them with jazz eclecticism and a slice of vibrant folk and then inject the current rock scene with this heady cocktail. The results are both remarkable for the listener, refreshing for the collective sonic mindset, and act as a wake-up call for the modern musical landscape.
At a time when anything is possible, when the old tribal demarcations and clear-cut musical genres have been washed away, it is surprising how many artists still stick to the old rules and guidelines, making music precisely in the sonic image of what has gone before. Not so Myles From Home.
Although clearly drawing inspiration from icons of the past – the jazz-country-blues-rock fusion of bands such as brothers Allman and Doobie indeed spring to mind, this is a thoroughly modern creation. And for every step back into hallowed ground, there are at least two strides into a glorious new future.
If you thought rock music was becoming stale, jazz music was an impenetrable genre, funk and soul were sonic realms unto themselves, and pop music was a spent force, we need to look to bands such as Myles From Home and songs like “Van Trippin’” to invigorate the musical landscape.
