All music has a secret inner power. Some music can lift you, some can make you blue, some might make you feel, and some might even make you think. But this is the first time playing a track has made my immediate surroundings seem colder. As I struggle to keep my office warm against the last vestiges of winter, which still grips us, the aptly named “Cold Outside” seems to bring a bit of that icy blast into the room.
Sitting somewhere between a cinematic soundtrack and shoegaze density, shimmering ambiance, and dream pop accessibility, there is something genuinely evocative of the chilling air and frost-covered world that lies just on the other side of my window. As if this is some sort of elemental spirit of winter turned into music, a primal force seeking an embodied form in the world of sound.
Gentle funk-infused bass lines and cool beats provide the drive, but what NUTRI3NT hangs on this structure truly sets the musical temperature. Synthy sonics swirl like distant snow flurries or chime like the cracking of ice, and lingering sax lines seem to race across the sky like a weather front heading in.
“Cold Outside” is less a song and more an environment, a place, a state of mind. It is a remarkable achievement, a track that crackles with icy energy. I have to say; this is the first time I have come across the music that comes with its of Met Office weather warning and an inbuilt wind chill factor!
