It is nice to see that music is getting political again. Okay, maybe not political with a capital P, but undoubtedly socially aware, able to comment on modern life, speak truth to power, and make valid points about where we are going as a race, a civilization, and a planet.
As someone who grew up in the shadow of punk and immersed in post-punk attitudes and sentiments, it has been disheartening to see rock music turn into some sort of self-aggrandizing and bravado-ridden force and pop music head into vacuous and irrelevant territories, contributing nothing to the discussion about the modern world, even as dark clouds gather on the horizon. So it is excellent to find Nyki Lindsay King cutting through all those irrelevances with a song like “Running Out of Time.”
Poignantly and powerfully reflecting on the state of the world today, this is a lyrically personal song but one that we can all relate to. He welds this message to a sonic maelstrom, one rising from delicate sonics, evolving into sub-metal grooves and alt-rock moves, finally exploding into anthemic highs and punching the message home with screamo intensities.
Lyrically astute and musically a force to be reckoned with, this song both advances the cause of the rock scene in general and reminds artists that once they have managed to get to a place where they have a sonic soapbox from which to broadcast their thoughts and fears to the masses, they really should have something worthwhile to say; otherwise, it’s just an opportunity wasted.
Thankfully, Nyki Lindsay King understands this only too well and uses his moment in the spotlight wisely, eloquently, and powerfully.
The lesson to be learned by other artists looking on is this: be more Nyki!
