Things happen fast in the world of Tal Rasha. In existence for only a year, they have not only laid the foundations for a great touring network, both in their native France and beyond its borders, hooked up with some internationally renowned names and also dropped this lush 5-track EP.
Forget rock; this is the epitome of rock and roll. Rock music might be defined by being big and full of bravado, but this is also forged from many more important qualities, qualities which many bands have forgotten about – swing and swagger, groove and grind, sexiness and taste. And it is such elements that make this eponymous EP such a great experience.
For me, “Cactus Honey” says it all. It’s a blend of sassy soul and raucous rock, it is spacious, slinky, and full of attitude. This song so eloquently shows the difference between rock and rock and roll that it should be taught in music schools. why opt for pace when poise is so much a better route, why be big when you can be clever?
“All (For You)” reminds me of that brilliant blend of roots and rock that bands like The Black Crowes and Free were so deft at, and “Asherah” is one of those slow-burning anthems that allow a band to exhibit all aspects of their creativity, a sonic journey from the understated to the epic.
They look great, they sound great, and the future looks so bright that they need to be sure that the Factor 50 sunblock is listed on the rider of every gig they play from now on.
