While it is great to understand where you come from, knowing where you are going is healthier. And that is what lies at the heart of ON’s sound. Sure they are happy to tip their collective hats to the punk, grunge, and alt-rock stalwarts who have influenced their sound, but this is no nostalgia-fest, to resting on musical laurels or reveling in past glories. ON have, their eyes firmly fixed on the road ahead. The past is done and dusted; the future is where the action lies.
And while the band is master of the immediate riff, listen to songs like “Break You”, “Soul Killer”, or “Underdog” to assess their skills in that department, it is perhaps the bands that lay at the heavier end of the College Rock sound that looks to for inspiration. In the same way that crews such as The Pixies were able to blend pop melody with raw rock abrasiveness, or say, Sonic Youth were able to be both incendiary and immediate in the same sonic sucker punch, ON follow in a similar vein.
As if to show that they are far more than merely a rock band, “Hereafter” is pure indie, built on deft notes and largely un-effected sounds…guitar pedals off, drums restrained, bluey breaks, and slightly funky grooves. What were you expecting? No. Well, that’s the point.
A cool album. A smart album. A deftly crafted album. A rock album? Yes…but much more. So much more.
