There are many reasons to like, admire… and indeed love what Ooberfuse do, from their adventurous and eclectic sound, their ability to blend the fresh with the familiar, the way that, as they travel the world, they absorb and amplify the cultural sounds they pass through, and so on. But for me, their standout attribute is their positivity.
Even before you get to talk about their music, what connects everything they do is that they give to the world much-needed, currently lacking elements – understanding and empathy, love, and a call for unity, peace, and harmony. It’s as if their music is the vital force needed to fill up the world’s fuel tank. A fuel tank for an engine currently running only on fumes! They just happen to doall of this through the creation of beautiful, energised, optimistic music.
“To Love To Peace Today,” as the title indicates, sees this brilliant duo, and cherished collaborators, putting even more positive vibes out into the world. This coming together with musicians from Bethlehem and recorded in that iconic city, blends western sonics and Middle Eastern instruments, resulting in an infectious yet subtle, arabesque groover with an important message.
“To Love To Peace Today” is built on a heady blend of drifting ambience and subtle energies, moving effortlessly from hushed vocal whispers to a beat-driven dance piece, a song draped in the timeless sonics of the Oud and eastern percussion, but also wielding more expected pop weapons, such as guitars and keyboards. It’s a gorgeous dance through genre and geography, culture and creativity, one that pulses like a beacon from an oasis of understanding across an emotional wilderness.
As the artists themselves point out, “Bethlehem isn’t a symbol in a Christmas card. It’s a living community asking the world to stop looking away.” A very valid point given the volatility in that part of the world at the moment, but obviously a song sending ripples and repercussions right across the globe in these dark and difficult times.
Gorgeous music, as ever, but as beautiful as it is, it is perhaps its poignancy and importance that are the main factors here.
