If I remember correctly, I described Pam Ross’s last single, “Kansas,” as being a “timeless tune.” Well, as well as anything else you could say about its follow-up, “Tonight,” you have to say that it proves that the previous sonic outing was not a fluke. Anything but. “Tonight” also has those same qualities, the same feeling that this is a song you have known for a long time.
Blending her trademark elements – rock drive, Americana honesty, and folk finesse – whereas “Kansas” was about escaping to that metaphorical destination, somewhere, anywhere, losing yourself, and starting again, “Tonight” is about being right here, right now, and with the right person. If “Kansas” is full of restless energy and escapist sentiment, now we find Ross more content with her lot and happy that she is with the right person.
She is lyrically poetic, down-to-earth, musically understated, creatively astute, and mindful that relationships need to be worked on. But she also understands she is precisely where she needs to be right now.
Pam Ross echoes those 1960s singer-songwriters of Laurel Canyon, not anyone in particular and certainly pursuing a less ornate sound, but there is something special in the intimacy and honesty, something brave in the vulnerability and openness of her music that I haven’t heard coming from the singer-songwriter camp for a long, long time.
