It can perhaps be seen as a sign of the musical times that more and more bands are turning away from the tried-and-tested narratives of pop and rock—unrequited love, self-aggrandizement, cooler-than-thou sentiments, and the age-old “boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy tries to understand what the hell went wrong.” Instead, they are using their moment in the limelight to rebel against many issues, not least the modern, twisted status quo and the face of a darkening and more entrenched and belligerent society.
So “Hostage,” the new one from The Infinity Process is, in their words, a “rebellious anthem against the chaos and negativity prevalent in today’s world.” And we probably need more of this sort of thing to be happening.
Musically big, bold, and anthemic, “Hostage” runs on grinding riffs and abrasive noisescapes, metallic walls of sound that cut through the musical landscape just as readily as the lyrical message cuts to the heart of their dissatisfaction and disenfranchisement with modern society.
Hard rock with a futuristic edge? Metal soundscapes being reappropriated for more meaningful purposes? Rock that is both big and clever? Call it what you will, but it is hopefully a taste of things to come, a signpost pointing at to a time when bands remember that making music in the modern age affords them an important and very powerful soapbox. So, be like The Infinity Process, and when that moment comes, when you find yourself in the spotlight, make sure you have something poignant and powerful to say.
