If the singer-songwriter’s role is to hold a mirror up to his audience by making honest observations and revelations about themself, then Parmy Dhillon is about as singer-songwriter-y as it gets. When he tells us about aspects of himself, his own life, and his personal experiences, we recognize some of those things in ourselves: our feelings and failings, hopes, and happenings.
His latest single, “Organise Your Mind,” sees him reflecting on his exploits as a musician, an older, wiser mind analyzing his younger self, and as he does so, we can all relate to, at least some part, of his tale.
He has a familiar style, one that echoes some of the sounds of the grunge and college rock bands of the eighties and nineties, only, of course, with a more stripped-back sound. But it is a style that works for him, and rather than sound retrospective or nostalgic, it actually comes as a welcome break from the gimmick-driven, celebrity collaboration, and style-over-substance releases that seems to be the genre norm at the moment.
No, this is the sound of a revival, a return to a more robust and discerning style, a reworking of a sonic style that served us so well for so long. Parmy Dhillon understands that it is through understanding the sounds of the past that you can shape the sonic vision of the future.
