Roots music is one of those terms that is so broad and vague so as not to be very useful when trying to describe a sound or song. But, I would say that many of the genres that fall under its broad umbrella are found flitting through “This Time,” the new single from Pete Price.
Taken from his second solo album, Pictures in Time, this succulent single reminds us that Old World musical traditions and New World sonic innovations have never been that far apart from each other. And for every fantastic European-sounding folk move found here, an equal amount of country grooves are also to be detected. Interestingly, the violin, sorry, fiddle, that runs brilliantly behind the main thrust of the song seems equally at home in either world.
Into this already heady mix, he weaves some chiming mandolin and country-blues guitar licks, which, alongside the aforementioned fiddle, each get their spot in the limelight.
And the message of the song? Keep moving forward, breaking new ground, reinventing yourself, and be the change you want to see. Considering I have harped on too long already about the familiar sounds found running through “This Time,” it is only fair to say that the buoyancy and bounce, energy, and sheer personality that Pete puts into this song keep things brilliantly fresh and wonderfully fun, not to mention lyrically relatable. Familiar, yes, fresh….absolutely!
So anyway, what is roots music? Well, if you can’t hear it in “This Time,” it probably ain’t worth worrying about.
