Somewhere in the swirl of post-punk subgenres past, a place where darkwave digitalia and new romantic futurism, formative electronic pop, and gothic dance all creatively coalesce and constructively conflicted with each other, you find the latest single from Pink Turns Blue. Although often given the tag Darkwave, their music has always gone beyond what such a label means, or at least advanced its sonic borders. “Black Swan (But I Know There is More to Life)” is no exception to this forward-thinking quest.
This collection of ambient blends and ticking beats, salvos of raw guitars, and washes of electronica sits somewhere between Depeche Mode’s dark digital designs and Joy Division’s snarling guitars, ebbing and flowing between the two to create brilliant dynamics.
Contemplating the idea of life’s purpose, “Black Swan” poses a poignant question: what do you think life is about, and given that, did you try to live it to the logical conclusion, whether that be to have fun, make it a better place, spread love or whatever you thought it was about. If life is what you make it, what did you make it?
The post-punk era was perhaps when rock and alternative music shifted from merely being throwaway fun to having something really interesting to say. Now, forty years on, such music is as poignant and soul-searching as ever, thanks to bands such as Pink Turns Blue.
