PUNCHBAG - I’m Obsessed EP (Mute Records)

9 April 2026

PUNCHBAG’s ‘I Am Obsessed’ EP captures the raw electricity of adolescence distilled through the lens of precision songwriting, transforming everyday anxieties and fixations into something viscerally immediate. Clara and Anders Bach have built on the taut emotional framework of their debut EP, expanding their sonic palette to explore obsession, chaos, and the delicate absurdity of human behavior with incisive clarity.

From the very first note of “What’s In My Bag,” the duo establishes a sense of intimacy that is simultaneously unsettling and exhilarating. Clara’s vocals, sharp and urgent, cut through Anders’ rhythmically propulsive guitar and bass lines, articulating moments of discomfiting self-reflection that feel both personal and universal.

“Pile of Clothes” slows the pace just enough to expose the brittle architecture beneath their melodies. Sparse percussion punctuates Clara’s lyrics, rendering each observation about domestic disorder into a quietly anxious meditation on the accumulation of both physical and emotional clutter. Anders’ guitar licks curl around the vocal lines with a subtle insistence, suggesting that beneath the surface of everyday life, tension is never fully resolved.

“Playing God” brings forward the EP’s darker undercurrents, with jagged bass patterns and staccato percussion providing the perfect foil for Clara’s exploration of control, power, and vulnerability. The song’s angularity is offset by a sense of melodic openness, creating a dissonance that mirrors the lyrical content: the exhilaration of dominance intertwined with the terror of overreach.

In contrast, “I Love This!” operates with an ironic exuberance, its bright hooks and catchy rhythm offering a momentary reprieve from the EP’s brooding intensity. Anders’ guitar lines shimmer with pop-inflected flair, while Clara’s vocal delivery navigates the liminal space between genuine affection and self-aware sarcasm, highlighting the duo’s ability to render emotional complexity in deceptively simple forms.

The track, “I Am Obsessed,” crystallizes the themes that thread through the EP. Its spiraling guitar motifs, precise bass, and kinetic drumming create a sense of claustrophobic propulsion, while Clara’s voice captures the simultaneity of desire, anxiety, and fixation. The song embodies the chaotic energy the Bachs describe: overwhelming, disordered, and unflinching in its honesty. Every instrumental element feels deliberate, from the tension in Anders’ chord choices to the syncopated rhythms that pulse like a racing heartbeat, coalescing into a portrait of obsession as both exhilaration and unease.

‘I Am Obsessed’ extends PUNCHBAG’s sonic universe beyond the immediate bite of their first EP ‘I’m Not Your Punchbag’ (Mute, 2025), presenting a five-track statement that balances intimacy, chaos, and sharp observation. The EP’s strength lies in its ability to dramatize the everyday, turning minutiae into moments of emotional and musical intensity. The pair demonstrate a command over space, dynamics, and nuance, offering listeners a vivid glimpse into their world where obsession, humor, and anxiety coexist with magnetic energy.
