Push Puppets - Shake It Like You Mean It (Flowering Tree Music)

29 July 2025

The fact that Push Puppets have not only a deft way with the songwriting pen but a broad-minded approach to what goes into their sound, means that they continue to release songs that are both sonically adventurous and yet still part of a cohesive and recognizable sound. This is a band happy to test their own boundaries, but never to the point that they lose what identifies them in the first place.

Such is undoubtedly the case with their latest, “Shake It Like You Mean It,” a song built on a Latin groove and Spanish-flavored runs and riffs, but also marked by a sound which is undeniably theirs, not to mention sweeps of orchestral finesse and banks of additional vocals which grow as the song heads towards it’s final destination. It’s the sound of Chicago’s temperate cool meeting the sun-kissed climes of the western Mediterranean.

An anthem to “just doing it,” rolling the dice, leaving it up to fate, and perhaps the wider public to decide if you have what it takes, it’s a great message, especially in this age where poise and polish and perfection are seen as tantamount. Of course, it is also a great song.

And a great song requires a great video, in this case a blend of silly silent movie clips juxtaposed with slick band performance footage, echoing the song’s own balance of wit and wisdom.

Taken from their latest, fourth album, Tethered Together, Erich Specht and his sonic puppeteers have knocked it out of the park, yet again!
