When we think of classic piano-driven pop, we perhaps think of Elton John’s stadium tunes, the dulcet tones of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” or the social observations of Billy Joel’s golden age. What is so great about this new one from the brilliantly monikered Rex K & The Snake Pit Philharmonic is that it sets this long-established genre in a wonderful new light.
The piano at heart is a mercurial blend of classical confidence, raggle-taggle barrelhouse blues, and psychedelic tangents, and there is even plenty of additional even plenty of humour, courtesy of the lyrics and whimsey, thanks to the pleasantly surprising inclusion of a kazoo. It’s a riotous assembly of acoustic ideas and sonic adventure, sounds and styles, chronological eras, and musical scenes. Bold, brassy, brilliant!
But underneath the explosion of creative colour and frantic fun, a serious point is being made. The “Sincerely Indecision” being addressed here relates to those moments when we find ourselves frozen before a fork in the road of life, a difficult decision, a choice of path to travel. We’ve all been there; it’s just that, normally, such decisive moments don’t come with such a delicious soundtrack.
“Sincerely Indecision” is one of those songs that remind you that most of the heavy lifting in music has already been done and that the genres and scenes of the past have left the modern music maker with plenty of building blocks to work with. The trick is to find new and exciting ways of fitting them together. This is the sound of that process in action.
