It’s an apt title for a band that hasn’t put anything out for a few years. A hint at more music to come? A sonic call to arms? A statement of intent? It doesn’t really matter. All that matters is that they are back…and back with a vengeance.
Capturing that middle ground between the alt-country groove of Ryan Adams at his finest and the garage-rock swagger of Johnny Thunders at his most eloquent, “Lead Me Out of the Wilderness” is a brilliant return.
Guitars gnash and snarl, sing and serenade as required, bass and back beats drive and deliver, pianos cascade and color the heart of the song, and Davies gives it the requisite vocal blend of bar room prophet and rock and roll drifter.
The song may have come out of the blue, but its arrival is sure to excite discerning rock ‘n’ roll music fans about what might come next. After all, what sort of person would drop such a great song and then leave us hanging?
