There can be a temptation for bands in the realm of rock music to approach every new album as if they have to reinvent the wheel; that evolution has to move quickly and is the defining factor in a band’s journey from one album to the next. I don’t believe this to be the case; sometimes the greatest achievement is simply drilling down into the formula that has always worked. You can make a good argument for the fact that hard rock found its perfect form decades ago, which is clearly something that Rough Grind understands, as Neverending Night is an album aimed far more at gradual sonic evolution than abrupt revolution.
With this, their third studio album, the Finnish outfit proves that classic hard rock still has plenty to say, and they are happy to let it speak through the quality of their songwriting and cleverness and clarity of their composition. Blending muscular guitars, driving rhythms and an atmosphere of brooding melancholy, the band creates a soundscape that feels both timeless and timely. There is plenty of power here, but also a welcome sense of dynamics and emotional depth. Mood and muscle and melody all working together.
Opening track “Waiting for the Night to Be Over” lays out their sonic stall from the outset, packed with grinding guitars, thunderous riffs, relentless momentum, and lyrics that explore the long darkness that defines their homeland. “The Great Divide” taps into the glorious twin-guitar tradition that has long defined the genre, while “Ocean of Dying Dreams” balances sheer weight with impressive musical ambition, proving that heaviness and sophistication can comfortably coexist. The break from these traditions comes with “Quietus”, a cinematic and beautifully restrained ballad that reveals another side of the band entirely, demonstrating that they are just as adept at anticipation and atmosphere as they are at all-out attack.
Neverending Night doesn’t set out to redefine, reimagine, or reboot hard rock; instead, it simply reminds us why we fell in love with it in the first place. Strong songs, confident performances, and an instinctive understanding of the genre’s strengths make this Rough Grind’s most complete statement to date.
