Modern accessible and infectious rock forged out of the classic sounds of the past? I reckon so. Well, of course it is more than that, but if you are the sort of person who likes to unpick the threads of songs and examine the musical minutiae (and why would you feel the need to do that?), you would find 90’s alt-rock and timeless pop accessibility, an ebb and flow of grungey sonic weight, and some classic indie moves woven through the proceedings.
Royal Blush also works wonders with song dynamics, moving from anthemic highs to understated lulls seamlessly and seductively, one moment pitching to the grunge rock devotee, the next teasing the alt-pop picker, the next beckoning the denizens of the rock club to fill the dancefloor and throw some crazy shapes.
And if the song is seriously good, and it is, the video is seriously fun, a blend of live performance, though more creatively done than the usual band on stage visuals, and some silly interludes. Clearly a band who takes the music seriously but themselves…not so much, which is always a healthy combination.
This second single from their sophomore EP, Where We’re From, reminds us that pop and rock were never the opposite camps that some would have us believe, and that the former can add much-needed contagion and sass to the often clichéd world of the latter. Similarly, pop with a rock-and-roll engine room is more than the sum of its parts.
Still, it doesn’t matter what you call it, just play it, play it loud, and play it often.
