Who said that rock and roll can’t be deep? Who said it isn’t au fait with metaphor and hidden meaning? Who said that it doesn’t understand the notion of reading between the lines? Santa Claws understands these things all too well, and the new single, “Gimme A Minute”, is the proof.
Musically, the song runs on subdued, rock and roll lines, happier to groove and grind along, making the most of the power of rhythm rather than feeling the need to go all out and fire off unnecessarily complex six-string salvos. No, the clever sonics found in this song are presented as motifs and fills around the edges of these driving energies, just adding intrigue and interest with only the playout seeing an additional weave of the beguiling guitar being woven through the straighter rock deliveries.
If the music is played straight, simple, and effectively to the point, it is in the lyrics that we find the real depth. Sally, the song’s lead character, is in love with life. She dances to her own tune. She lives one day as it comes, in the moment and on borrowed time. And she annoys the hell out of everyone around here. Is it the price to pay? Is it just jealousy on their part? And I guess the question being asked here is, don’t we all wish that we were brave enough to be the free-spirited butterfly that Sally is?
I remember when rock and roll as all about cars and girls, “Gimme A Minute” gets to the heart of questions about how we chose to live our lives, or perhaps choose not to. When the heck did rock and roll grow up and get so smart?
