soFiA Lainovic - Autopilot (TAbMiLiA)

8 August 2024

It’s always nice when something a bit different falls out of the review pile, something that seems much better constructed than the usual pop pap, more thoughtful than the run-of-the-mill indie bravado, and more adventurous than the regular rock cliche. And if you can do all of that and still make music that is groovesome, infectious, dynamic, and interesting (remember when music was interesting?), you are indeed on to a winner. Autopilot is the sound of an artist doing just that.

Munich based soFiA Lainovic not only has a rule-breaking approach towards the case and capitalization of words, but she has a similar attitude to where the demarcations of music genres lay. This means that she can offer us “Oh, Well (Orwell Made His Prophecies),” a succulent slice of neo-soul sophistication followed by the raw, rock grooves of “Twisted Reality” and then the ambient and progressive strains of “Is She Just Polite?” in quick succession. And then you get the wonderfully languid, trip-hop vibes of the brilliantly titled “Drowning in the Washing Machine.”

Autopilot ticks a lot of boxes. It is, at turns, soulful and seductive, poppy and accessible, groovesome and rock-infused, indie-folk inspired and ambient but always adventurous, allowing soundscapes to shift and change as the mood seems to take her. Predictability and expectation are laid to rest, but done so in the most gentle of ways.

soFiA Lainovic is genuinely an artist making music at the creative cutting edge, and Autopilot is a brilliant sonic mission statement.
