Soft Science keep “Fade” light on its feet. Matt Levine’s guitar carries much of the texture, bright and hazy without swelling into a wall of sound, while Katie Haley’s vocal stays soft enough to leave plenty of space around it.
The guitar gives the song its character. Repeated figures shimmer beneath the vocal, creating movement without disturbing the calm of the arrangement. Even as more layers come in, “Fade” stays gentle and uncluttered.
That softness suits a song about memory and the small changes that gradually make the past feel distant. Haley sings about places, movement, and things slipping away, but the track never turns mournful. There is comfort in the way Soft Science let those memories remain beautiful even as they recede.
Ross Levine adds guitar, synths, and backing vocals, while Becky Cale on bass, Tony Cale on drums, and Hans Munz on electronics keep the song moving underneath Haley’s vocal. The layers are present everywhere, but none of them push for attention at the expense of the melody.
“Fade” appears on Soft Science’s fifth album, Sand. Recorded at Shattered Records and The Pool House, the track was engineered by Jack O’Donnell, mixed by Kev Bolus at OneEleven, and mastered by Antony Ryan at Red Red Paw.
“Fade” is out now via Shelflife Records in the US and Spinout Nuggets in the UK. Sand is also available now.
