If a first single can act as a calling card for a band, its follow-up is a good way of putting a second pin in the musical map, one that then acts to mark out the length and bredth of their sonic spectrum for all to see. And, with “Distant Land,” that is exactly what Talk in Vain has done. If their debut single was a subtle and supple blend of rock sounds, they have taken a much heavier stance for this second outing. The two singles taken together make for an interesting mission statement.
Both singles are rock, clearly, but whereas “Her Case” created dynamic through acoustic guitars and various understated passages, things seem to start big this time out and just keep going from there. But although a big sound is being produced, there is an unexpected, well, maybe not that unexpected if you have been paying attention, addictiveness to the song, pop contagion grafted onto a rock machine.
Guitars groove and grind, beats drive, and vocals get to sweep and soar, the result being a classic rock sound for the modern age, one built on all the familiar tenets of the genre’s established sound and style yet which has been polished and retooled for a new audience. It’s fresh yet still familiar…which is a clever thing to do, a very clever thing indeed.
