The Discretes - In Sore Bless (Oriflamme)

14 July 2026

The Discretes make an arresting first statement with In Sore Bless, an album that constantly pushes against easy categorisation, drawing from post-rock, ambient electronic, noise and art rock. What gives the record its emotional pull is the contrast between CECILIA’s intimate vocal delivery and Ali Ayrik’s densely textured arrangements. Rather than competing for space, voice and instrumentation seem to circle each other, creating an uneasy balance between fragility and force. Lead single “Deep Noon” introduces that dynamic effectively, setting a tone that carries through the album without becoming repetitive.

Tracks such as “Liquid Lips,” “Sable Noir” and “Blue Hour Pending” unfold with cinematic restraint, allowing layers of drones, strings and electronic textures to emerge naturally. Even at its loudest, the music avoids feeling cluttered, maintaining a sense of purpose beneath the distortion and shifting soundscapes. The multilingual lyrics add another dimension, reinforcing the album’s dreamlike quality. Echoes of Portishead, Chelsea Wolfe and Blonde Redhead can be heard throughout, but In Sore Bless is less concerned with genre than mood. The Discretes prioritise emotional immersion over conventional song structures, inviting listeners into an experience that is meditative, unsettling and unexpectedly beautiful. Those willing to meet this album on its own terms will find a richly detailed debut that lingers long after its final notes have faded.
