The Early - I Want To Be Ready (Island House Recordings)

17 March 2026

The collaborative synergy of Alex Lewis and Jake Nussbaum, performing as The Early, operates on a level of intuitive understanding that blurs the boundary between deliberate construction and spontaneous discovery. Their latest release, ‘I Want To Be Ready,’ is a testament to the idea that the most profound musical experiences occur when the listener cannot distinguish between what was meticulously planned and what was captured in the heat of a shared moment. Recorded and mixed by Zach Goldstein at Kawari Sound, the album offers a transparent window into a sophisticated, leaderless dialogue.

The record opens with “The Laughing Earth,” a piece that immediately establishes the duo’s preference for atmosphere over traditional melodic hooks. Lewis utilizes the electric guitar and Korg Minilogue to create a shimmering, expansive field of sound that feels both grounded and weightless. Nussbaum, drawing upon a deep rhythmic vocabulary, provides a percussive foundation that avoids the predictability of a standard beat, opting instead for a series of evolving textures that pulse with life.

In “Sand Clock,” the group explores a sense of temporal suspension. There is a perceptible nod to the experimental spirit of nineties Chicago, yet the output is entirely fresh. The interplay here suggests a profound commitment to the collective output rather than individual virtuosity. This continues through “Hill Forms,” where the duo achieves a focused, unified frequency. The music moves with the grace of a natural phenomenon, shifting like light across a landscape, demanding an attentive ear while simultaneously offering a sanctuary for deep contemplation.

The penultimate track, “Flossless,” highlights the duo’s ability to maintain an engaging presence without ever resorting to explicit statements of groove. It is an exercise in restraint and trust, where every electronic flourish from Nussbaum and every resonant chord from Lewis feels essential to the whole. The album reaches its thematic peak with the title track, a sprawling conclusion that embodies a sense of preparation and poise. It is music that functions equally well as an object of intense study or as an ambient accompaniment to the quietest hours of the night.

By synthesizing disparate influences into a singular, cohesive voice, The Early have produced a work that feels remarkably relevant to the current cultural temperament. ‘I Want To Be Ready’ is an invitation to inhabit a space where multiple perspectives exist in harmony, creating a sound that is as ancient as a murmuration and as modern as the hum of a distant city.
