The Flip Phones - Polaris (Flip Phones Music)

7 April 2025

I love songs like this new one from the brilliantly named Flip Phones. Songs that seem to pulse with the echoes of music across the decades, and it isn’t hard to recognize everything from sixties, pastoral psychedelic hippie-folk to seventies power-pop whimsey and from 80’s R.E.M. album tracks to cool 90’s indie-pop and everything in between swirling about at its heart.

It’s a cool and infectious number, one built on easy grooves and effervescent drive, and for all its apparent lightness, it takes an interesting tack. Everything on their latest EP Spinning Adrift discusses uncertainty, fate, and purpose in an ever-changing world, and this single is no different.

“Polaris” reminds us there is always a way forward and that even in our most bewildered and unfocused states, we can find a metaphorical Pole Star to show us the path ahead.

This is the sort of thing that we need more of in the music world. Songs that are chart-friendly but with something interesting to say, music forged out of clever musical combinations but which are as accessible as hell, music that seems light and airy but which is built from ornate sonic architecture. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if this sort of thing was the order of the day rather than the current wave of over-earnest, cliche-ridden rockers and wailing pop wannabes whose record sales are inversely proportionate to how many clothes they take off before making a music video?

I think so.
