There are fewer, more hallowed musical holy places than Camden, London, so any band calling that part of the NW1 post-code home will, merely by osmosis, come already be draped in the sonic history of London’s iconic music scene past and present.
And so it is with The Graft, and their latest single, “Superman,” is like a musical tour around the history of such a place. From the inherent 60’s vibes to the tasteful, soulful vocal touches, from the Brit-pop swagger to the of-the-moment, contemporary indie groove, this single shows that they are fully aware of recent, and perhaps not so recent, musical history.
And even beyond those sonic cornerstones, they throw in some psychedelic-infused, liquid guitar lines, some pop-aware immediacy, and a hint of the baggy bravado that ensued when rock and dance finally got it on. In fact, it is hard to see what they have missed out.
If you think the terms cultish and commercial are mutually exclusive, The Graft manages to break down those barriers and make these opposites so attractive. This is the sound of music that will be as popular on the football terraces as it will be in the sophisticated, downtown clubs, as likely to hit the charts as it is to be found as the soundtrack in the most exclusive basement wine bars in places like…well, Camden, for example.
