The High Strung has been consistently releasing great records since 2003. Their song “The Luck You Got,” remains their most well known composition, acting as the theme song for the ongoing Showtime television series, Shameless. For most bands, this would be enough, but for The High Strung, it’s just another hook filled tune in an almost endless batch of gems the band continues to pen.
Enter their new LP, I, Anybody. Released in early January on New Fortune Records, the album adds to the group’s already impressive canon. “King Drum,” arrives early as the record’s strongest cut. Fetching guitars push against melodic bass runs while gluey hooks clasp everything together. The outfit delves into Ray Davies territory with, “Come Go Mad.” With crack humor and wit, the lyrics, “Let’s make a vow/Right here and now/So we can get on with it,” resolve the bridge but not before a Davies-esque “Ah-la-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da” is added. “Imitation,” examines the eternal struggle of artists finding their own voice, space and time. It pairs familiar rock moves with evocative lyrics while keeping their own artistry in tact.
The High Strung remains an accomplished band that is still far from the finish line and I, Anybody proves it with every spin.
