The Kellows - Eve (self-released)

6 January 2026

It is perhaps telling that The Kellows call Sheffield, UK home, the city that also gave us iconic bands such as Pulp, Reverend and the Makers, and Arctic Monkeys, all bands that have shaped British indie music in recent times. And it is the last of those three which feels like a touchstone for their latest single, “Eve.”

In its indie textures, its cascading jangle, its effervescent energy, its modernity, and its unbridled groove, you can certainly hear more than an echo of Alex Turner’s sonic posse. But I’m not suggesting, for one moment, that The Kellows are merely copying what has gone before; this isn’t an exercise in sounding like the aforementioned Steel City stalwarts. But they do capture some excellent sonic traits, ones that have, to be fair, been present in all the best indie bands, particularly those looking to cross from the cultish to the commercial, those underground bands who have burst Trojan Horse-like into the overground to dramatic effect.

Infectiousness, accessibility, immediacy, groove, and memorability all run alongside those driving guitars, beatific beats, pulsing basslines, and the sing-along-ability (that’s a word, right?) of the lyrics.

No, this isn’t the sound of a band looking to ride the coattails of the past, but it is the sound of a band that has learned from it. It is also the sound of a band who know how to pen a tune…a tune that should, with a fair wind and a bit of luck, be all over the charts and radio, playlists and public consciousness before you can say “Blimey, why am I only just hearing this band now?”
