I love the band’s own tag for their latest single, “Everything” – “Modern panic wrapped inside an alt rock anthem,” a line which in itself makes you want to know more. Not that you should need much encouragement, The Lunar Keys have, through a series of cool releases, proved that they are a band that any discerning music fan should keep an ear out for.
Here, they wander between fractious highs and hushed lulls; the song’s dynamic is sonically changeable and emotionally wayward, on the one hand employing staccato beats and choppy riffs, on the other curling up into a musical ball and making themselves as small as possible. If a person were this unstable, this conflicted, you book them into a therapist.
A modern slice of alt-rock, but a sound that is helping to pull the genre into some more interesting, more adventurous, more modern territory. In fact, I would suggest that, as alt-rock has been with us for a generation or so, it has actually become the mainstream rock sound. If that is the case, then The Lunar Keys are part of the reset, the fight back, the next chapter…they are alt-alt rock!
And in keeping with today’s more broad-minded rock and roll ethics, previous releases have seen their record sales linked to tree-planting campaigns and donations to mental health charities; this is clearly a band where artistry and altruism go hand in hand. Keep up the great work, the world needs bands like this, bands that can walk the walk and also make the world a better place as they do so, a band that both kicks arse and cuts the mustard!
