“Remember when the best nights started with a full tank of gas and nowhere specific to go?” So asks Kevin Franco, and “Drive-In Movie (Wonderful Time)” is him capturing such carefree feelings in song, a feeling that, as responsibility and obligation encroach on our lives, is now accessed only through such wistful songs.
But the great thing about it is that it isn’t so much him wishing he was back there, it is the sound of him merely wiping a tear from his eye and just saying weren’t we lucky to have that. Life changes and moves on; it’s just the nature of things, but one of the wonderful things about it is that hopefully, we can all look back at such times and see them as not only a beautiful chapter in our lives but also part of the process that made us the people we are today.
And, as is often the case with The Muster Point Project, while the song has a lot going on – picked guitars that merge with indie riffs, beats that drive but don’t intrude, gorgeous harmonies, the giddy wash of Hammond organs – such is Franco’s ability to shape the dynamics of a song that the result is both brilliantly accessible and beautifully crafted.
Finding the sweet spots in the modern musical landscape is something that The Muster Point Project does better than most, and even given Kevin Franco’s already impressive back catalog, “Drive-In Movie (Wonderful Time)” is both a brilliant portal to our collective pasts and a new sonic high.
