Taken from the forthcoming EP of the same name, “What A Day (Disco)” is both a classic Mystery Plan and not. But they are so varied and adventurous, eclectic and experimental that you could say that about almost everything they put out.
The impetus behind the song was a feeling on the part of Jason Herring as he emerged from lockdown into the light of a more normal life to make something “fun and groovy.” But their idea of such a concept goes beyond the superficial and frivolous that most people would opt for, and the result is a song that mixes and merges two musical camps.
Yes, “What A Day (Disco)” is groovesome and buoyant, uplifting and upbeat, but it is also draped with blissed-out waves and washes of sound, and its edges are softened with hazy vocals. And between the vocals and the beat, there is plenty of space where these pastel-pop vibes and slightly 60’s Summer of Love musical sentiments are free to pool and percolate, creating lush atmospherics and warm, sonic scirocco winds which drift through. Fun? Check. Groovy? Check. Smart, sophisticated, poised, polished, unique, gorgeous, graceful. Check, check, check, check, check, check, check.
It is everything that you come to expect from The Mystery Plan but so much more besides. Which, ironically, is everything you come to expect from The Mystery Plan!
