The Room let “Temptation Harbour” move at its own pace. There is no rush in the arrangement, and that gives Darren Brown’s guitar room to become the song’s most expressive element. The playing is clean and remarkably pretty, carrying small melodic turns through the spaces around Dave Jackson’s vocal.
Jackson sings with the same smooth restraint. His lines repeat enough that certain phrases begin to settle into the music rather than simply advance through it, giving the song the feeling of a story being revisited as much as told.
That repetition works especially well against the guitar. While the vocal keeps returning to familiar shapes, Brown continues filling the space around it with detail, keeping the track moving even when the words deliberately circle. The guitar never needs to become loud or dramatic to command attention. Its movement is subtle, but it continually changes the emotional shape of the song.
“Temptation Harbour” draws inspiration from three films by Hungarian director Béla Tarr, fitting naturally into Doom Pop!’s wider interest in cinema, science fiction, horror, and strange transitional spaces. The reference does not make the track feel academic. It appears more clearly in its patience, its storytelling, and the sense that the song is allowing an atmosphere to develop instead of forcing one.
Becky Stringer’s bass and Clive Thomas’ drums keep that slow movement grounded, while Ethan Kyme’s keyboards add further depth around Brown’s guitar. Nothing is fighting for the centre, which makes the smaller instrumental changes easier to hear.
The result is one of the quieter pleasures on Doom Pop!. Jackson’s repeated vocal gives “Temptation Harbour” its narrative shape, but it is the guitar that keeps drawing the ear back in, finding something slightly different each time the song passes through the same space.
Doom Pop! was recorded and mixed by Steve Powell at Ark Recording Studios in Liverpool, produced by Jackson and Powell, and mastered by Pete Maher.
“Temptation Harbour” appears on Doom Pop!, out now via 9×9 Records.
