Every time that I feel that the power of rock and roll is waning, the Gods of Music always seem to send me something to believe in, something that restores my faith in the genre. Their latest sonic pick-me-up has come in the form of Irish three-piece (medically proven to be the best of all rock and roll formations) The Savage Hearts.
Radio Silence, their latest quartet of songs, tells you everything you need to know about the salvation of the genre, the title track kicking things off in an onslaught of punk-adelic, garage rock and roll, horn blasted, low-slung guitar grooved, fun and furious, frenetic and fantastic.
“This Time Tomorrow” blends old school rock ‘n’ soul with a fresh, modern groove (and skirtis with shouting distance of Boo Radleys’ “Wake Up, Boo” only filtering it through a gnarlier, darker, jagged sonic prism) and “Dead Man’s Lottery” is a squalling, seething, salvo of punk-abilly prowess that even The Cramps would have been impressed with. Things are rounded off by “20 Million Miles to Earth,” which wanders into an incendiary goth-tinged, rock groove.
Where as most rock and roll bands seem to be looking at the musical glories of the last few years and tinkering and re-tooling those sounds, slightly, to ride the coat tails of former fad and fashion, The Savage Hearts are reinventing the early years of rock and roll itself, a version of which take a ride through soul and proto-punk, garage rock and along the borders of hell itself.
As I said when I reviewed the titular single, this is the only Cavan club you need to concern yourselves with. (And if you don’t get the joke, perhaps invest in an atlas!)
