Art matters. Music makes a difference. And whilst I usually mean that in a more general, less tangible way, in the case of The Sea At Midnight’s latest single, this also applies in an all too real and very practical sense.
Anyone who has listened to their most recent singles, “Wait For Rain” and “Burning,” will be aware of a spirit of environmental care and concern that runs through the band and their music. With “Our Brilliant Destruction,” they have taken things a step further, pledging to donate all proceeds from their Bandcamp sales to support victims of the recent LA fires. Here is a band happy to put their money where their mouth is.
Musically, we find them at the more considered end of their sonic spectrum, a blend of anthemic alt-pop and darkwave vibes, reminding us of the close ties, at least in the early days, of the gothic scene and the pioneering, post-punk, pre-fame new romantic scene, before money became more important than motive.
It is a stark warning, a perfectly poised, philanthropic pop prophesy alluding to how blindly we are stumbling into an inevitable fate, as politicians abandon such concerns in their quest for even more personal profit. (I am writing this on the day that Donald Trump has signed an executive order to take The USA out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. …again!)
They say a prophet is not recognized in their own land, but at least The Sea At Midnight knows that it isn’t all about profit.
