Almost all music reminds you of something that has gone before; that is just the way of the world and not in any way a criticism. This being the case, the challenge for any artist is to take their collective influences and combine them with their own inspirations to create something fresh and new yet familiar enough to appeal to the collective comfort zones of the potential audience.
And, if you want to know what that sounds like, you should give “Pick Me Up” a spin. Here, the Uppsala, Sweden based The Search has created a song that echoes with a shimmering eighties-infused sound, a heady blend of dream-pop grace and coiled indie riffs, and just enough rock drive to keep things moving along.
But as much as the song tips its hat to the past, it does so only tentatively. For every new wave or new pop move from a time gone by, there are an equal number of modern moves. This balance of gentle nostalgia and forward-thinking makes for a song that is perfect for today.
It is not only perfect for today, but because it isn’t rooted too deeply in any current sound or sonic trend, it transcends any such fleeting and fickle fad or fashion, a juxtaposition that is perhaps perfect for a song that talks about second chances, lost connections, and reconciliation.
