The Silence Industry - The Crawling Eye (Aenaos Records)

16 April 2024

It is always lovely to see a submission from Aenaos Records drop into the review pile; experience tells me that music from that quarter will be an excellent experience for someone with my tastes. It is music that I generally find myself appreciating both as a fan and a reviewer, the sort of thing that I would have listened to back in the day and the testament to such a fact is the number of their artists that have found their way from work’s review pile to my personal music collection.

The Silence Industry sounds like a band destined to take a similar course, and “The Crawling Eye” is not only something that would have excited the younger me but also something that I still find sonically pleasing. Very pleasing indeed.

“The Crawling Eye” is a gorgeous blend of alt-rock weight and dense gothic shade, a song built on dark melodies but also enough muscle to make it appeal to the more mainstream rock fraternity too. It walks a knife edge between groove and grace, drapes itself in grandeur and anthemic highs and yet avoids all the cliches that the gothic world often falls on – the theatrics and the melodrama, the immature lyrics and the B-movie horror images.

The Silence Industry in general and “The Crawling Eye” in particular is the sound of the gothic end of the musical landscape growing up, reaching maturity and really coming of age.
