The Stolen Moans - Morning Scars (Trophy Bruise Music)

17 October 2024

If sonically, “Morning Scars” sits in the eye of a swirling sonic storm, one that takes in all manner of genre, sound and style, form and function, lyrically, it similarly covers a lot of ground too.

On top of a post-punk blend of alt-rock and droning synths, gothic glamour and new wave sass, Celtic harp, and waves and washes of heady organ sounds, The Stolen Moans ebb and flow between chiming anthemics and brooding lulls, alternative pop accessibility, and strange tangental sonic side quests.

This, then, is the perfect platform from which the band casts their lyrical web, one that, if not directly referencing such events, is certainly full of considerations such as the Halloween season of darkness and atmospherics, the upcoming US election, and the chaos and conniving that seems part and parcel of that dehumanizing parade, as well as ongoing struggles for equality and women’s rights.

It is lucky that The Stolen Moans have emerged at a time when genre and demarcation, tribal sonic allegiance, and the musical tags and pigeon-holes of the past have been swept away because, in such an environment, the arguments about exactly where they fit in would go on forever. All you want to concern yourself with is that here, we have a band that is both inspired by the past and breaking new ground, appealing to existing comfort zones but mixing things up in such a way that new music is born. Not just new music – fantastic new music at that.
