The Sunmills - Rock and Roll (self-released)

23 April 2025

Imagine if Britpop had come with a side order of funk. Or if Red Hot Chili Peppers had taken a more indie-pop route. Can you hear it? No, well, don’t worry, if the sound doesn’t readily present itself to you, give The Sunmills latest single, “Rock and Roll,” a spin because, and well, there it is.

But there is much more going on than that; after all, the best music can hardly be captured in such simple soundbites. Sure, there is definitely something of the ’90s about the song, but with the blending in of those near-falsetto chorus vocals and the sheer sing-along-ability, there are also strong echoes of ’60s pastel pop and seventies psychedelia.

It’s an infectious song that makes you join its merry throng, throw some shapes, and hit the dancefloor, even if you are the most immovable wallflower. There is also a sense of irony running through the song, I think, – through the sheer infectiousness and light-hearted nature of what they have created here, they appear to point fun at those who still think that rock and roll, fame, and musical success are the answer, even whilst the band members themselves may secretly harbor such ambitions. Such a song makes for the perfect cover. Clever, very clever.

With crunchy guitars, pounding drums, and an intricate and funky bassline (although I must admit, if you want to hear what the four strings can really do, tracks like “Not Going Home” are the ones to check out), its a fun, frantic and fantastic song, it’s as simple as that.
